As I mentioned in my last post I am trying to do different things this year, and I decided to start of with my beauty products. So when I found this easy recipe for DIY Shampoo with Baking Soda I just had to go for it!
Hair is a tough one. Everyone has such different hair so it’s hard to tell what is really right for you.
For myself, I have thin and brittle hair and I find it so hard to find a good shampoo and conditioner that actually works without leaving it looking either greasy or dry. In the winter it is frizzy and full of static. And I have always had that problem of growing it long! It’s a no win situation.
I have probably spent over five hundred dollars worth of shampoos and conditioners in the last year alone! Yikes! That is absolutely ridiculous! And I am putting a stop to it starting now!
So here is what I have decided to do… Now I know you have probably all seen those posts on Pinterest and wondered does it actually work? Well, let me be your guinea pig!
Apple Cider Vinegar
Peppermint Essential Oil
To make Shampoo;
Mix 1 part baking soda with 3 parts water, my hair is a little longer than shoulder length so I found I used about 2 tsps. baking soda. (You can adjust if your hair is shorter or longer)
Apply the mixture to dry or wet hair by starting at the roots and working to the ends. This definitely is not like your regular shampoo at all, in fact it seems really weird at first to be putting backing soda in your hair, but I like the fact that I am not putting any harmful chemicals in my hair.
I let it sit for 1-3 minutes while I do the rest of my showering.
After washing and rinsing with the baking soda mixture, you’ll want to apply a vinegar rinse.
To make Conditioner;
Mix 1 part white or apple cider vinegar (I am using apple cider) with 4 parts water. And to make it smell a little prettier I add a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Make sure to tilt your head back so that you don’t get the vinegar in your eyes and rinse your hair entirely with the conditioner.
Tip: I do my mixtures up the night before and put them in small containers with lids and place them in the shower so they are ready for the next morning.
So after doing this experiment for the first time I was pleasantly surprised at my results. My hair was actually easy to brush when I got out of the shower; I was thinking it would be a tangled mess!
Once it was dry, I noticed it seemed softer and maybe even a little shinier! I used a bit of argon oil to keep my fly away’s down and that was it. It actually looked good all day and it smelled really nice! Bonus!
I have gone two days without having to wash my hair since doing this DIY experiment, so tomorrow I will do it again, and I will keep continuing on from there. I can only hope that my hair will get stronger and healthier and maybe even start growing!
I will keep you guys posted for sure!
Have you tried it? I would love to know, comment below…
